Woyzeck

10-12 Sep 2009

T

Georg Buchner’s Woyzeck remains one of the most enigmatic and influential works of modern theatre.

Woyzeck is based on the true story of Johann Christian Woyzeck, a lowly soldier in Leipzig, Germany found

guilty of murdering his mistress in 1824. Between his conviction and execution, he was subjected to a

dehumanising medical examination to determine if he should be held responsible for his actions. The implications

of this scrutiny provide the impetus of Buchner’s play. The drama is shocking both for its content and its radically

innovative episodic, hallucinogenic structure.

In Sadari Movement Laboratory’s dynamic interpretation of Woyzeck, wooden chairs are used as a changeable

metaphor, the performers both shape the dramatic space and the tragedy of the human condition, while Astor

Piazzola’s dynamic tango becomes the throbbing pulse of the drama.
